REVIEW: Acme California IPA

by Jay Morris

The quest to find the best IPA in the USA continues with a stop at North Coast Brewing Company in Fort Bragg California  for the Acme California IPA. According to their website " North Coast Brewing Company opened in 1988 as a local brewpub in the historic town of Fort Bragg." They go on to talk up the 70 awards in national and international competitions that they have won.

On to the beer the first thing I noticed was the bottle, the logo was retro. The label has a smiling blonde wearing a dress drinking a beer. Not exactly what you see on your everyday beer label anymore.

Acme IPA (ABV 6.9, IBU 55) is lighter in color than most IPA's I have tried and very cloudy, nice head, and good lacing. Nice floral to start, ends with the hops bite that is usual from an IPA. So with only 55 IBU I was expecting a tame IPA, this has a nice hops bite. It does lack some malt complexity, but that intensifies the hops flavor.  Overall Acme California IPA just an above average IPA for hops, but average for everything else. That said I would buy it again.
