One of my old bands opened for Foghat back in the late 80's. We were thrilled to get the opening slot, but we were also filled with the whole, "We wanna blow these guys off the stage" attitude that comes with being young and naive. Because of that attitude, I'm sure I missed the enjoyment and true appreciation of watching some great players that night. Fast forward 25 years, and I'll be the first to say, I'm really glad I got to see Foghat's Craig MacGregor play bass at Ribfest last weekend. I thought the band in general was very good, musically tight, fun, and entertaining, but as the show progressed, I found myself watching MacGregor more and more. Soon I was watching his playing intently, with smile on my face, and I even remember saying "Wow!" more than once. I am not a bass player, but it was easy to see that this guy has been smokin' good for a long time. When the band finished I Just Want to Make Love to You , I decided right then and there that I was going to write about it today. And as the show progressed, I noticed someone sitting on the side of stage, in front of the side-fill monitors, obviously enjoying watching MacGregor as well, nodding his head with a big grin. It was Johnny Colt, the former bass player for The Black Crowes, and Train, and currently of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Check out MacGregor in this clip of I Just Wanna Make Love to You. If you don't have time to watch the whole video, check it out at about 2:50 seconds in.
