Monday February 3d, 1964:
*Four days from leaving for America
*Six days from Ed Sullivan Show
With two shows left in their 20 show residency at the Olympia theatre in Paris, the Beatles visited the American Embassy to secure their work permits and visas for their upcoming trip to America in four days. At this point they were hoping it wouldn’t be a bust. The encouraging news was “I Want to Hold Your Hand” had been released in the U.S. on January 18th and they found out it went to number one two days earlier.
Capitol Records had started promoting their impending arrival in December-- "The Beatles Are Coming!" -- and by the end of January they were all over the radio. They had no idea what was waiting for them on the other side of the pond.
So this evening was spent like the previous few weeks. They hit the stage in Paris and treated France to From Me To You,Roll Over Beethoven,She Loves You,This Boy,Boys,I Want To Hold Your Hand,Twist And Shout andLong Tall Sally. The Red, White and Blue countdown was on!
