SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Excel Energy is working to restore power to Sioux Falls customers in the spring storm that's coating trees and power lines.
Excel says damage to the system is extensive and some customers may not have power restored Thursday night. Excel Energy says at noon today, 35,000 customers remain without power. Crews from South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota and contractors from Iowa, a workforce of 230, are dedicated to restoring service
Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says the greatest risks from this storm, especially in rural areas, are traffic crashes and electrocution. He says trees and branches are falling across rural roads that aren't frequently traveled so someone could easily drive into a downed power line.
Milstead also asks rural property owners to watch for downed power lines on their farm, especially with children home from school and playing outdoors.
He advises residents to call your utility provider for a downed power line but also call 9-1-1 to let Metro and emergency personnel know where those lines are.
