Neil Young Takes Specially Built Hybrid Car for a Test Drive

Neil Young recently returned from a tour of Australia with his longtime backing group Crazy Horse , but the folk-rock great already has headed back out on the road.  The singer/songwriter doesn't have any concerts scheduled on his itinerary, though:  He's just taken his specially built, fuel-efficient hybrid car known as Lincvolt for a lengthy test drive.

Young launched the Lincvolt project several years ago, with a goal of using modern technology to transform a gas-guzzling 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible into a clean-burning yet powerful automobile able to travel without the need for roadside refueling.  The development of the car has hit a number of speed bumps over the years, including a November 2010 fire that caused extensive damage, but the project seems to be back on track.

Neil has launched a blog to document his trip, which apparently began last Wednesday.  According to the messages posted on the Lincvolt website, Young has been traveling through Southern California and, so far, has stopped in Joshua Tree National Park and the Imperial Sand Dunes.  The posts are being written from the perspective of the vehicle, and also feature a series of photos.

In one of the most recent entries, posted on Tuesday from the aforementioned dunes, "Lincvolt" writes, "As I sat idling silently, all around me dune buggies and dirt bikes whizzed past, patrolling the dunes.  Looks like fun, but I think I'll stick to cruising the blacktop."

The message also features this informative tidbit: "Did you know that my onboard generator helps make me a long range cruiser that runs clean on cellulosic ethanol?"
