Fire Chief stresses safety

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Fire-Rescue Chief Jim Sideras say while Excel energy is making progress on restoring power, there are still many live power lines that are down.

Sideras says if you come across a downed power line treat it as a threat even if it's not sparking or arcing.

The Chief says to be patient in removing both snow and branches.  He says today, tomorrow are not the days to learn how to operate a chain saw.  He advises waiting for someone who is trained to use a chain saw.  He also cautions residents who are shoveling or operating a snowblower to take their time.  The snow is wet and heavy and it's easy to overexert.

Sideras says so far there's been only one reported injury earlier this week when an elderly woman was struck by a falling branch and suffered minor injuries.
