Neil Diamond says last week’s Boston Marathon bombing has inspired him to write a song about the national tragedies that America has experienced recently.

Diamond, who surprised the city of Boston last Saturday when he showed up at Fenway Park to lead the crowd in the Red Sox eighth-inning rendition of his song “Sweet Caroline," tells Rolling Stone , he’s in the midst of writing new material, including a song inspired by the bombing.

“I’m writing now and obviously affected by this situation in Boston, so I’m writing about it just to express myself,” says Diamond.

The veteran singer/songwriter says the unnamed song will cover more than just last week’s deadly bombing. “It’s like an infestation, and I’m writing about the general situation, not just about this bombing in Boston, but what we’re going through with all of these tragedies -- shootings and so on and so forth,” Diamond tells Rolling Stone .

The song does not yet have a release date, but when Diamond spoke about it with Rolling Stone at the end of last week, he said, “With a little bit of help from the man upstairs, I’ll have it finished by the weekend.”
