SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel arrived in Sioux Falls last night and started an initial assessment of the damage caused by the ice storm three weeks ago.

Senior Environmental Specialist Portia Ross says the agency is seeing firsthand the damage identified by the state.

She says the preliminary assessment will include estimates of costs to recover from damages.  To clean debris or repair power lines, for example.  Then the numbers will be submitted to Governor Daugaard to see, based on that information, if the state would like to request a Presidential Disaster Declaration.

Ross says FEMA plans to have those early figures ready for Governor Daugaard by Thursday.
