BURNSVILLE, MN (KWSN)- Sioux Falls was picked to finish fifth in the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football race by league coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday.

The Cougars picked up 159 points in the poll to rank behind fourth-place St. Cloud State (183). Minnesota State, Mankato was picked to win the league with 223 points, while Minnesota Duluth (207) and Winona State (191) rounded out a very tightly-contested top three. USF is projected to finish third in the NSIC South Division, behind Minnesota State (48) and Winona State (44).

In addition, senior wide receiver Carrington Hanna (6-2/222/Sr./Streetsboro, Ohio/California University of Pennsylvania) was tabbed as the 2013 NSIC South Offensive Preseason Player of the Year. Hanna had a breakout season in first year as full-time starter at wide receiver for the Cougars, racking up 69 catches for 898 and 10 touchdowns. He led the NSIC in receptions per game (6.27) and ranked second in receiving TDs (10). His 81.5 yards per game was the league’s fifth-best which help him earn NSIC South Division All-Conference Second Team honors.

A pre-medicine major who boasted a 3.42 GPA, Hanna was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and All-District selection. Hanna led USF with 40 receptions that resulted in a first down and was credited with 12 plays of more than 25 yards. He twice eclipsed the 100+ yards receiving mark and pulled in a career-long 61-yard score in a win over MSU-Moorhead (9/8), where he also tossed a 39-yard touchdown pass. Hanna hauled in the game-deciding nine-yard score at Augustana (10/20) and finished his junior season with 919 all-purpose yards.

USF was picked to finish eighth overall and fifth in the NSIC South last season before responding with a 9-2 record to take fourth place in the 16-team league. The 2012 squad opened with a 32-19 road upset of No. 16 St. Cloud State, climbed to No. 17 in the national rankings and went on to secure the program’s 19th straight winning campaign.

USF opens the 2013 season at Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, September 7. The contest is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
