PIERRE, S.D. (KELO AM) – Preliminary estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show South Dakota’s unemployment rate remained at 3.9 percent in July.

South Dakota's July 2013 labor force of 449,000 increased by 6,600 (1.6 percent) compared to the July 2012 level of 445,000. The level of unemployed decreased by 2,600 people (13.0 percent). The unemployment rate was down over the year from 4.5 percent to 3.9 percent.

“We continue to experience a strengthening economy,” said state Labor and Regulation Secretary Pam Roberts. “Employers are hiring more workers than they were a year ago.”

Over the month, the seasonally adjusted nonfarm wage and salaried worker level was unchanged when comparing the revised June level to the preliminary July level of 418,400.

Over the year, the seasonally adjusted nonfarm worker level increased by 4,500 workers (1.1 percent). The largest number of jobs was added in the trade, transportation and utilities (3,200 workers or 3.9 percent); leisure and hospitality (1,700 workers or 3.8 percent); and educational and health services (800 workers or 1.2 percent) industry sectors.
