Legendary Detroit singer Mitch Ryder and his wife survived a head-on crash with a suspected drunk driver this past weekend, police told The Detroit News .

Ryder performed a concert Friday night in Auburn Hills and was returning home with his wife around midnight when an oncoming pickup truck suddenly crossed the center lane.  The singer, who turns 68 later this month, told the newspaper, “I saw the headlights going for us and I had a split second to either drive towards oncoming traffic or towards the ditch.”

Ryder says he jerked his Buick Enclave to the right, moments before the pickup truck crashed into the front driver’s side of the singer’s car.  All of the vehicle’s air bags deployed.  Ryder’s wife, Megan , was hospitalized with minor injuries and released Sunday night.  A third person in the backseat was not injured.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the 21-year-old driver of the pickup failed road sobriety tests.

The singer was not injured, but acknowledged it was a close call. “We were about a mile and a half from home...Detroit nearly lost one of its icons.  It was pretty scary,” Ryder said.
