A variety of U.K. musicians gathered at London's Abbey Road Studios on Monday to re-record most of the songs on The Beatles ' debut album, Please Please Me , in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original recording sessions for the record.

Squeeze 's Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook , ex-Squeeze keyboardist Paul Carrack and Simply Red 's Mick Hucknall were among the artists who participated in the event, which was broadcast live by BBC radio and also was taped for a special titled Please Please Me -- Re-making a Classic , which will air on British television this Friday.

Monday's session featured the musicians performing the same 11 tunes the Fab Four recorded on February 11, 1963 over a 12-hour period, in the same order they were originally recorded.  Among the tunes played were the title track by Difford and Tilbrook, "Misery" by Carrack, "Anna (Go to Him)" by Hucknall, "A Taste of Honey" by Joss Stone and "Boys" by members of The MerseyBeats , a band that performed alongside The Beatles during their early days in Liverpool.

Video clips of segments of the event can be viewed online now, and complete BBC radio coverage, including individual performances and interviews with the artists, is available on demand at BBC.co.uk .
