South Dakota KIDS COUNT finds more families on food stamps

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The goal of the South Dakota KIDS COUNT project is to provide the most current and reliable data that tracks the well being of children.     Project Director Carole Cochran says the latest book shows an increase in temporary assistance, or food stamps, to needy families.     Cochran says between 2010 and last year over 6500 more families, a 17 percent increase, took part in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.     She says the Factbook also show that infant mortality, low birth weight, child deaths, teen violent deaths and births to single teens went down over the last five years.     But, Cochran says, the percentage of women getting prenatal care was down.     The state says there are more than 227,000 children under the age of 18 in South Dakota.     The KIDS COUNT project is compiled yearly by Cochran at the Beacom School of business at the University of South Daktoa
