Guitarist Dan Toler , who was a member of The Allman Brothers Band from 1978 until 1982, died Monday at his home in Sarasota, Florida, after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.  He was 65.

Nicknamed "Dangerous Dan," Toler joined The Allmans after a stint with singer/guitarist Dickey Betts ' side group Great Southern .  He appeared on three Allman Brothers Band studio albums -- 1979's Enlightened Rogues , 1980's Reach for the Sky and 1981's Brothers of the Road .  Dan's brother, David "Frankie" Toler , also was a member of Dickie Betts & Great Southern, and played alongside Dan in The Allmans from 1980 to 1982.  The siblings later joined Gregg Allman 's solo band and played on Allman's hit 1986 album, I'm No Angel , and its 1988 follow-up Just Before the Bullets Fly .

In later years, Dan went on to play in a series of other groups, including The Renegades of Southern Rock , TGZ and The Toler/Townsend Band .  He also rejoined Betts in Great Southern for a few years during the early 2000s.

David Toler died in June 2011 after suffering complications from a liver transplant.  According to the Sarasota Herald-Times , a couple of months later Dan announced that he was suffering from ALS.  Dan Toler is survived by his wife, Debbie , and their daughter Danielle .

The Allman Brothers Band has paid tribute to Toler in a message on their official Facebook page that reads, "He was a very talented guitarist with a gregarious personality.  He will be missed by all that knew him.  Rest peacefully, Brother Dan."
