Some artists will tell you they never listen to their own music. Well, Lionel Richie admits that not only did he listen to his songs, but they actually helped him cure his depression.
Speaking to the British paper The Mirror , Lionel explains, "I went through a painful period in my life when I lost my father and got divorced at the same time. Then a friend said to me, 'Lionel, I have some inspirational tapes I want you to listen to.'"
Turns out those "inspirational tapes" were collections of Lionel's own songs, with certain ones underlined. "I started listening to my lyrics -– this time from the point of view of someone who needed that message," he recalls. "My friend said, 'You already know the answers. You have done it for other people for years, it’s time for you to listen to yourself.'"
Lionel says now, he finally understand why his music has meant so much to so many people.
"I used to look out into the audience and wonder why that guy was crying to one of my songs and now I get it -– it just hits something in your core," he explains. "I was blessed with one basic gift in life. And that gift is bringing joy into other people’s lives."
You'll be able to cry in the audience yourself this September, as Lionel tours North America for the first time in more than 10 years.
