Paul McCartney apparently is interested in taking part in a planned attempt to set a U.K. record for the most musicians performing a song together.  The event, dubbed Guitars on the Beach, will be held at the English shore town of Lyme Regis on September 7, which would have been the 77th birthday of rock 'n' roll pioneer Buddy Holly .  Organizers are hoping to get more than 2,000 guitarists to play Holly's song "Rave On."

One of the gathering's organizers is Geoff Baker , who worked as McCartney's chief of public relations for 15 years.  Baker tells the BBC that he received a letter from the ex- Beatles star "saying he's checking to see if he can fit in the Guitars on the Beach gig."  Sir Paul, of course, is a huge fan of Holly who also happens to own the publishing rights to the late musician's catalog.

Notable musicians who have been confirmed to participate in Guitars on the Beach are ex- Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell and Robbie McIntosh , who has played with McCartney, The Pretenders and a number of other well-known artists over the years.  Those interested in joining what's being called "Britain's Biggest Band" can register for the event at GuitarsOnTheBeach.co.uk .
