SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Live Well Sioux Falls is hosting a Healthy Community Design Summit tomorrow to discuss strategies on creating a livable, sustainable and healthier community.
Mary Michaels with the Health Department says community leaders will discuss healthy designs to encourage more walking, bicycling and transit use.
Michaels says a walk audit, used to assess a community’s walkability, will be in tomorrow’s Summit. The audit addresses ease to cross a street, is there too much traffic, do you need a trafic signal, are the sidewalks in good condition, are they wide enough to pass by a wheelchair or stroller or are there curb cuts?
Michaels says the keynote address by Mark Fenton, former host of “America’s Walking” on P-B-S, will discuss how improving physical activity leads to improved air quality, less traffic congestion and boosts the economy.
The Live Well Summit starts Wednesaday afternoon at one at the Holiday Inn City Center.
