Man and woman charged with robbery, aggravated assault, eluding and child cruelty


SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  A Mitchell woman and a Sioux Falls man were arrested early this morning when a shoplifting at the eastside Walmart turned into a vehicle chase that ended on Rice Street.

     Officer Greg Schmit says 28-year-old Joanne Swallow is charged with aggravated eluding, cruelty to children, shoplifting and driving while suspended.

     Schmit says 34-year-old Robert Salinas is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, second degree robbery and resisting arrest.  

     Schmit says the pair is accused of shoplifting children's clothing but were stopped by store security.  Salinas pushed security aside and they ran to ther van and the chase began about ten minutes later.  Salinas also allegedly grabbed the steering wheel, while Swallow was driving, to swerve their van toward a police car.

     Three children in the van; four and eight years old and a five month old, were taken into protective custody.
