Moore, Telford named to all-region team

BROOKINGS, S.D.(KWSN) — Two key members of South Dakota State's Summit League tournament champion baseball team were named Tuesday to the All-Midwest Region Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Representing the Jackrabbits on the honor squad were first-team relief pitcher J.D. Moore and second-team designated hitter Daniel Telford.

A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Moore established a new Jackrabbit single-season saves standard during his sophomore season with 13 — a total that also led The Summit League. The right-hander made a team-high 26 appearances, posting a 1.99 earned run average and limiting opposing hitters to a .175 batting average. He struck out 38 batters in 31.2 innings, while walking only 14.

Telford, who was the Most Valuable Player of the Summit League Baseball Championship and a first-team all-Summit League honoree, led the Jackrabbits in all three triple crown categories, compiling a .410 batting average with six home runs and sharing the team lead with 36 runs batted in. A left-handed batter from Newmarket, Ontario, Telford also turned in a team-best .680 slugging percentage in 42 games during his senior campaign.

South Dakota State, coached by Dave Schrage, finished the 2013 season with a 35-24 overall record and made its first-ever NCAA Tournament at the Division I level.
