SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Patience is a virtue for all Sioux Falls’ motorists, but it can be tested when sharing the road with bicyclists.
Officer Darin Martyna says bicyclists have the same right to the streets as drivers of vehicles do.
Martenya says if a bicyclist is occupying a lane, it’s their lane. But, he say riders are subject to the same rules of the road as drivers. That means coming to a complete stop at signs and red lights. He says bicyclists can be stopped and cited for not obeying traffic laws.
Martenya says it’s best for young children to ride bikes on the sidewalks. But he says that demands awareness from kids and drivers when cars are backing out of driveways.
Bicyclists can’t ride sidewalks in downtown Sioux Falls.
