Sioux Falls animal ordinance

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The second reading of the urban agriculture ordinance regarding animals is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2nd in front of the Sioux Falls City Council.

Zoning Enforcement Manager Shawna Goldammer says the Council last year passed the community gardening ordinance.  She says that was easy, but the opinions regarding animals are divided.

Goldammer says there were people who wanted strict prohibition against any farm animals and those who wanted to be able to have chickens or other small animals such as goats.

She says under the current ordinance, Sioux Falls residents can have as many chickens, turkeys, geese or ducks as they want.  Under the proposed amendment, residents would be allowed to have six chickens and six rabbits.

But if you wanted more than six chickens or rabbits, a duck, goose or a turkey, you would need approval from your neighbors and then pick up a city license.
