Cher finally revealed where she got her powerful voice from, a voice that's put her at the top of the charts for five decades: her 86-year-old mother, Georgia Holt .
On Friday's Good Morning America, Cher, in clips from Nightline 's exclusive interview with the singer that aired earlier this week, said of the similarities between her voice and her mother's, "They're not the same voice, but when we're doing the harmonies together. It's like The Everly Brothers . You really can't tell."
In the upcoming Lifetime documentary, Dear Mom, Love Che r, the entertainer documents what life was like for her and her younger sister while growing up with their mom.
Georgia Holt was hardly a conventional mother, married eight times to six different men. She was also a ravishing beauty, coming to Hollywood with dreams of becoming a singer, but ended up on the fringes, scoring small parts on big shows such as I Love Lucy and Ozzie and Harriet . But even though it was her daughter who wound up hitting it big, Georgia isn't jealous of Cher's success. "I’m thrilled that she did what I had wanted to do," Georgia says. "I don’t think I was equipped, strength-wise, to do it."
Watching Cher, Georgia saw that success wasn’t just about just singing. Cher spent years on tour, made many sacrifices and said she often felt isolated and alone. Criticism from others, Cher said, was sometimes too much to bear.
"You have no idea how crushed I get," she admitted. "It’s not like I don’t care and I come back. It’s like I am crushed and crushed and crushed. And I still come back."
Indeed, Cher's about to release the 26th album of her career. Describing it, she said, laughing, “It’s about being fabulous!” She adds, "I would say, truthfully, I’m not a huge Cher fan, and I’ve said this a million times, but I think this is probably the best album I’ve ever done."
In the Nightline interview, Cher also addressed reports that she and her son, Chaz , are taking a break from one another. She said the reports are not true, declaring that their relationship is “great.”
Cher's documentary Dear Mom, Love Che r, premieres May 6 on Lifetime at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
