Former Jimi Hendrix bassist Billy Cox will pay homage to his late friend and collaborator during a brief series of concerts he's scheduled next month in the northeastern U.S. The tour is mapped out from a June 9 show in Northampton, Massachusetts, through a June 26 stop in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. Cox and his group will be perform under the moniker The Band of Gypsys Experience at the gigs.
In addition to playing a selection of memorable Hendrix material, Cox and his band also will perform some original songs as well as a variety of classic blues tunes. The Band of Gypsys Experience lineup also will feature two emerging guitar players, Dani Robinson and Byron Bordeaux , who were personally chosen by Cox to take part in the tour.
"It was Jimi's dream to use a second guitarist. He was getting into a new phase of his music and he felt that one guitar limited the band and limited the new music that he was creating," explains Billy in a statement. "But that idea was not able to continue. Now almost 43 years later, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to continue the dream with two dynamic guitarists."
Cox first befriended Hendrix when both men were in the army more than 50 years ago. They went on to perform together frequently prior to the formation of The Jimi Hendrix Experience . After original Experience bassist Noel Redding exited the band, Cox rejoined Hendrix to play in his groups Gypsy Sun & Rainbows , The Band of Gypsys and a latter version The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
