Winter driving arrives in the Sioux Empire

by

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  It’s common sense when driving on snowy roads:  slow down.

With up to five inches of snow in the forecast through tonight, public safety officials are reminding motorists to allow extra travel time.

Lieutenant Jerry Miller, with Sioux Falls Police, says winter driving skills take time.

Miller says to allow additional stopping distance, slow down and pay attention to your driving.  He says it's a case of fine-tuning driving skills, the first snow always catches motoriists off guard.  He advises testing the stopping distance before coming to the stop sign or before traffic stops in front of you.

Miller says the first snow of the season always comes with an increase in vehicle accidents.
