Cougars win opener

USF Cougars
USF Cougars
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN) –  The University of Sioux Falls (1-0) posted a 93-69 victory in its season opener on Saturday versus Wisconsin-Superior (0-1). The win marked the 3rd straight in an opener for the Cougars and improved head coach Chris Johnson’s record to 3-3 in openers for his career.   Sioux Falls junior guard Mahlon Jones finished with a team-high 15 points, hitting 5-of-7 attempts from the field. Bryan Kielpinski finished with 13 points. The Cougars put six players in double-digits, as all 13 players saw action.   UW-Superior Yellowjacket senior guard Jarrod Peterson led all scorers with 20 points on 6-for-19 shooting.   Sophomore forward Jordan Stotts set a career high in the game with seven boards, despite the Cougars being edged 40-39 in total rebounds. Robert Goffney and Kielpinski each pulled down four of USF's 14 offensive boards in the game.   Sioux Falls held UW-Superior to just 35.5 percent (22-62), including a 6-for-23 mark (26.1%) from beyond the arc. It was also the largest margin of victory for Sioux Falls since defeating Mayville State 72-41 on Nov. 10, 2012.   The Yellowjackets held an early 10-6 lead behind the play of Peterson before three-pointers by Goffney and Brown put the Cougars on top 16-14 with 12:34 to play in the opening half. UW-Superior scored five unanswered points over the course of the next minute and a half to hold a 19-16 advantage. Another Goffney trey evened things at 19-all and the sides traded points until the Yellowjackets added a jumper with 6:36 remaining, forcing a called timeout for the Cougars.   USF went on a 7-3 run out of the timeout and would take seven of the last thirteen points to hold a 43-36 upperhand at the break. Peterson led all scorers in the opening half with 13, while Stotts pulled down six rebounds, including five on the defensive glass.   Goffney corralled a miss by Kielpinski and laid in it to open scoring 38 seconds into the second half before Kielpinski’s fast break dunk gave the Cougars a quick 11 point lead at 47-36.   Sioux Falls continued to bolster its lead through the remainder of the second half. A pair of free throws from Stotts pushed the lead to 72-58 at the 7:45 mark. The Cougars continued to dominate the remainder of the half and Johnson started to switch up his rotation after a six-point skein created a 19-point cushion at 80-61. USF closed out the game on a 7-0 run with two freebies by Jonathon Nebelsick creating the final margin of victory.     USF continues non-conference play next Saturday when it travels to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.    Courtesy: University of Sioux Falls
