Ranchers fume over Joan Jett on State's float

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota’s Secretary of Tourism is apologizing over a controversy with rock star Joan Jett.

Ranchers are upset because the animal rights activist will be on the State’s float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Secretary Jim Hagen says he could have picked better.  He says he accepts responsibility and is sorry the pick upsets producers.  He doesn't share Joan Jetts' opinions or viewpoints.  But he says she's there to sing a song and not to represent her beliefs or viewpoints.

Hagen thinks it’s too late for an alternate.

The President of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, Cory Eich, says Jett doesn’t sit well many ranchers or farmers.  Eich says Jett is a backer of PETA and she shouldn't be affiliated with South Dakota in any way, shape or form.  He considers the choice a serious lack of judgement on the part of state officials.

The float features a replica of Mount Rushmore National Memorial and has been a part of the parade since 2010.
