White hits milestone, but Jacks fall to Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, TX (KWSN-AM)  Chad White scored the 10 points he needed, plus one more, to become the 44th Jackrabbit score 1,000 points in his career, but South Dakota State came up cold from beyond the 3-point arc in a 68-54 loss at Texas Tech Thursday night.

“You’re not going to win one basketball game going 6 of 29 from three, and we thought coming into this year that we’d be a great 3-point shooting team and we’ve been awful  to this point,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “I thought our kids played hard, we out-rebounded a team bigger than us, but there’s more to the game than just playing hard, there’s playing tough and playing with confidence, and we’re not doing either right now.”

The now 1-4 Jackrabbits shot 34 percent from the floor overall on 18 of 53 shooting, while the now 4-1 Red Raiders shot 44 percent overall on 25 of 57 shooting, including a 5 of 11 mark from long distance, 45.5 percent. Additionally, Texas Tech outscored SDSU 3416 in the paint, and turned 14 Jackrabbit turnovers in to 22 points, compared to seven points for the Jacks on nine Raider turnovers. SDSU did win the battle on the boards by a 33-32 margin, with a 13-8 edge in second half points.

The hosts scored first and never trailed, but the Jackrabbits hung tough, keeping the Texas Tech lead in check for the majority of the first half. TTU led by as many as 10 on two occasions in the half before taking a 38-30 lead into halftime. That lead grew to as many as 14 points at 53-39 after a hot start to the second half, but the Jacks responded with an 11-3 run to close the gap to 56-50 with 5 minutes, 50 seconds left to play, but the Red Raiders bounced back with a 6-0 spurt to push the lead back to 12 points and seal the 68-54 win.

Along with White and his 11 points, the Jacks got14 from Brayden Carlson and 12 from Cody Larson, while Jordan Dykstra led all players with 10 rebounds to go with his seven points.

“I’m glad to be a part of this program and reaching 1,000 points is just a bonus,” White said of reaching the milestone. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates; Nate Wolters is a big part of that finding me in transition over the years. This new team, we’ll put it together and I’ll start making shots.”

Texas Tech’s Jordan Tolbert led all players with 19 points in the win. Dusty Hannahs added 12 points and Jaye Crockett 10 point for the Red Raiders.

The Jacks look to get back on the winning track on Monday, when they host Howard in the Progressive Legends Classic at Frost Arena at 8 p.m., a game preceded by a contest pitting Lehigh and Texas Southern against at 5:30 p.m.
