North Dakota State scored twice during a two-minute span in the middle of the first quarter and twice in the final four minutes of the second quarter to take a 28-0 lead into the break. Jensen threw for 210 yards in the first half. He was replaced by Carson Wentz near the end of the third quarter.

South Dakota twice drove into Bison territory. The first drive ended with a punt. The Coyotes got inside the 20 on their first drive of the second half, but Earl threw an interception in the end zone to Christian Dudzik.
