ST. LOUIS (KWSN)— South Dakota State University quarterback Austin Sumner was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week in leading the Jackrabbits to a 42-13 victory Nov. 23 over Youngstown State.
A junior from Brandon, Sumner accounted for three touchdowns -- two passing and one rushing -- in the season finale which helped vault the Jackrabbits into the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the second consecutive year. Sumner was efficient in snowy and blustery conditions, completing 15-of-19 passes for 170 yards, while running eight times for 38 yards. His touchdown passes covered 3 yards to Zach Zenner and 8 yards to Jason Schneider, while his 7-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter gave SDSU a three-score advantage. Sumner also had rushes of 16 and 12 yards to set up Jackrabbit touchdowns as SDSU went 10-fo-13 on third-down attempts on the afternoon.
The Jackrabbits open the FCS playoffs Saturday at Northern Arizona. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Mountain (7 p.m. Central) in Flagstaff, Ariz. Radio coverage will be available on the Jackrabbit Sports Network, with video coverage on ESPN3.com.
