SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KWSN) – A trio of Jackrabbits scored in double figures in Friday’s game at UC Santa Barbara, but four Gauchos crossed the 10-point mark, including Alan Williams, who set UCSB single-game records with 39 points and with eight blocks in an 83-64 win over the Jacks at the Thunderdome.
“They were just better prepared, quite frankly. We didn’t get off to a very good start in the first half. I thought we got off to a good start in the second half, we fought back and got back in the game,” head coach Scott Nagy said. “But when you look at every statistical category on that sheet, they did better than us, and were just better prepared.”
Turnovers proved costly for the Jacks, who fall to 3-5 on the season, as UCSB turned 15 SDSU turnovers into 17 points, compared to four points off seven Gaucho turnovers.
UCSB, which improves to 3-2, also finished with a 34-14 margin in points in the paint, which accounts for its 55.2 percent field goal percentage on 32 of 58 shooting, including a 18 for 26 mark, 69.2 percent, in the second half. SDSU shot 43.1 percent from the floor, making 22 of its 51 shots.
The Gauchos started hot, and built an early eight point lead, a lead that would get as high as 11 points at 21-10 with 10 minutes and 3 seconds left in the first half, but the Jacks hung tough, and cut the lead to just two at 52-50 at halftime on a Chad White 3-pointer late in the half.
White opened up the second half with another triple to put the Jacks up 53-50, the first of six lead changes, along with two ties, in the second half.
Leading 37-36 after a Connor Devine layup with 18:15 to play, Williams hit a jumper on the other end to give the Gauchos the lead back, part of a 9-3 and they never trailed again.
SDSU would cut the lead to as few as four points on two occasions in the second half, but UCSB sealed the win with a game-ending 17-4 run.
White and Cody Larson finished with 15 points to lead the Jackrabbits. Jordan Dykstra added 14 points and led the team with seven rebounds.
In addition to his school record in points and blocks, Williams led all players with nine rebounds. Zaimico Harmon added 14 points, Michael Bryson 12 and Taran Brown 10 points in the win. Harmon also led all players with eight assists.
The Jackrabbits look to rebound from the loss on Sunday, when they take on Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The Jacks and Cardinal tip at 5 p.m. PT, 7 p.m. CT.
