Is your heart ready for hunting?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Pheasant hunting isn’t a walk in the park.

Hunters wear heavy boots, carry a gun, carry birds, walk miles over tortuous landscape and, depending on the weather, can wear layers of heavy clothing.

American Heart Association spokesman Gary Myers says hunting places a significant strain on the heart.  He says the Association is concerned about all of the hunters that are coming into South Dakota this weekend and local hunters as well.  He advises hunters to pay attention to their bodies and watch each other for the signs of heart attacks and stroke.

Myers says heart attack signs include uncomfortable pressure or pain in the chest that spreads to shoulders and neck.

Myers says stroke signs include a numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg and a sudden dizziness.

Myers says even though hunters can be far from a hospital, call 9-1-1 immediately to activate emergency services.
