Elton John 's long-in-the-works biopic now has its leading man. Variety reports that British actor Tom Hardy , best known for playing the villain Bane in last summer's smash hit The Dark Knight Rises, has landed the lead role in Rocketman.
As previously reported , Rocketman , directed by Michael Gracey , will trace Elton's life from childhood to worldwide fame, and the story will be told through what has been described as "fantastical choreographed sequences" set to Elton's biggest hits. Variety reports that Elton plans to re-record many of his classic hits for use in the film.
An executive at Focus Features, which is teaming with Elton's movie production company on the project, tells Variety, "Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material. We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton."
In addition to The Dark Knight Rises , Hardy's other film credits include Star Trek: Nemesis and Inception , and he co-starred with Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon in the romantic comedy This Means War. He'll next star as "Mad" Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road , the next installment in the ongoing series of post-apocalyptic action thrillers that originally starred Mel Gibson .
