A new documentary about late rock legend Jimi Hendrix will be shown on PBS this fall as part of the network's American Masters series.  Jimi Hendrix -- Hear My Train A Comin' is scheduled to premiere on November 5 (check local listings), the same day as an expanded version of the film will be released on DVD and Blu-ray.

The two-hour documentary will trace the influential guitarist's astonishing music career, from his early years as a sideman to such stars as Little Richard and The Isley Brothers through his rapid ascendency to stardom to his tragic drug-related death at age 27.  The film will introduce previously unseen concert performances and home movies shot by Hendrix and Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell , and also will feature rare photographs, drawings, correspondence and more.

In addition, Hear My Train A Comin' will include interviews with Jimi, some of his family members and girlfriends; his band mates Mitchell, Noel Redding and Billy Cox ; and such famous musical associates and fans as Paul McCartney , Steve Winwood , Billy Gibbons , Dave Mason and Vernon Reid .  A preview of the flick can be viewed now at RollingStone.com .

The DVD and Blu-ray will boast expanded footage of Jimi in concert, including performances at the Miami Pop Festival in May 1968, the New York Pop Festival in July 1970 and Germany's Love & Peace Festival in September 1970.  The latter event was The Jimi Hendrix Experience's very last performance.  The video releases will offer high-definition visuals and revamped stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes from famed Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer .

In related news, a live album titled Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival will also hit stores on November 5.  The record boasts a previously unreleased performance by the group that was recorded by Kramer on May 18, 1968, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida.  The album will be available as a standard CD and on high-quality, limited edition vinyl.
