It's official: Sting 's first attempt at a musical is heading to Broadway.  It was announced Thursday that The Last Ship, a musical for which Sting has written the score, will premiere on Broadway in the fall of 2014, after it runs in Chicago from June 10 through July 13.  Visit BroadwayinChicago.com for ticket information.

As previously reported, the musical is based on Sting's childhood, during which he grew up near a shipyard in the north of England.  Sting is working on the musical with a team of people who've been involved with hit Broadway shows like Once , Wicked and Next to Normal .  “The memories at the heart of The Last Ship have occupied my mind for most of my life,” said Sting in a statement. "I was compelled to tell this story, and I've had the great fortune of collaborating with an enormously talented team."

The Last Ship is about a guy named Gideon Fletcher who leaves home and chooses not to go into shipbuilding like everyone else in his town.  When he comes back 14 years later, the shipyard's future is in grave danger, and his childhood sweetheart is engaged to another man.  The show is described by its producers as "a portrait of a group of people so bound together by passion and faith that they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known."

Sting's new album, also called The Last Ship , comes out on Tuesday, and most of the songs on the album will also appear in the musical.  The ex- Police frontman is marking the occasion by doing a set of 10 concerts to benefit New York's Public Theater.  The shows, billed as "An Evening with Sting," will run from September 25 to October 9.
