TOPEKA, Kan (KWSN) - No. 30 Augustana registered its ninth straight win in a big 7-2 region win over Washburn (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings improve their record to 18-1 while the Ichabods fall to 3-9 this season. A doubles sweep put Augustana ahead in the match 3-0, with the two tight matches in the top two pairings. No. 1 doubles pairing Katie Jesperson and Jessa Richards stayed perfect on the season with an 8-6 win, improving their season record to 17-0. Christine Olivo and Heather Sullivan edged WU's second-flight combination by an 8-6 margin and Jenna Helleberg and Meredith Lawrence completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 doubles match. The Ichabods cut the team score deficit to two by taking the No. 3 singles match. WU's Jodie Blakcim defeated Francesca Beg 6-1, 6-1 but the Vikings would quickly strike back. Jesperson showed her No. 4 region ranking with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at the top singles match. With the match-clinching win, Lawrence equaled the previous two singles scores with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. Richards provided the third straight win for Augustana, taking the No. 2 singles contest 6-3, 7-5. In the fifth-flight singles match, Helleberg notched a 6-2, 6-4 win to give Augustana their seventh win on the day. The No. 4 singles match went three sets, with Augustana's Olivo eventually falling for Washburn's second and final win. Olivo won the first set, but WU's Maria MoralCarretero answered with a late break and held on in the third-set super tiebreaker for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 win. The Vikings finish their two-match trip tomorrow in Emporia, Kan. with a 10 a.m. match against Emporia State.
