SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN)- USF head baseball coach Matt Guiliano announced Thursday that he has added Colorado State-Pueblo alum Andrew Kachel to his staff as the team's pitching coach.
Kachel replaces Matt Bowman, who left USF after four seasons to become the field manager for the Northwoods League’s Rochester Honkers. "I am honored to have been hired by Coach Guiliano and the University of Sioux Falls,” said Kachel. I look forward to working alongside Coach Guiliano and Coach Hieb moving forward, and am very excited to have the opportunity to help them better the University of the Sioux Falls baseball program.”
Kachel played collegiately for Northeastern Junior College, Montana State-Billings, and Colorado State University-Pueblo. Since ending his college baseball career, Andrew has coached for the Springfield Sliders of the Prospect League, Colorado State-Pueblo, and currently serves as the Head Assistant Coach for Adams State University.
A catcher throughout high school and college, Kachel was part of Northeastern Junior College's first ever Region IX Championship. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2009 but returned in 2010 to lead the NJC Plainsmen with a .320 batting average.
Kachel prepped at Doherty (Colo.) High School, where he still holds the Spartans’ single season RBI record (36) and ranks in the top-10 in batting average. A three-time all conference pick, Kachel led Doherty to Metro League Conference titles in 2004, 2005 and 2007. As a senior he participated in the 2007 Colorado Top 50 Game at Coors Field, which showcased the top 50 high school baseball players in the state of Colorado.
Kachel played on the 2007 Pan American squad in Aruba and was also a member of the 2007 Connie Mack World Series Host team, the Farmington Cardinals. He was offered a contract by the Tampa Bay Rays out of high school but chose to attend college.
Kachel has coached baseball in a variety of capacities since graduating from CSU-Pueblo, most recently as the catching and pitching coach at Adams State University. As a player-coach at CSU-Pueblo, he instructed RMAC 1st Team pitcher Mike Fabrizio and later coached Springfield Sliders alum Ryan Aper, who was selected in the sixth round by the Miami Marlins in the 2012 MLB Amateur draft.
Kachel added, “I was interested in being part of a program and university that is competitive and serious about improving themselves and their athletes in a conference that is both large and very talented when it comes to athletics.”
“I look forward to this new chapter in my coaching career and in my life, and am excited to be a USF Cougar and join Coach Guiliano’s staff."
Kachel earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from CSU-Pueblo and is currently in pursuit of a master's in coaching degree from Adams State.
