VERMILLION, SD (KWSN) — IUPUI hit four solo home runs, including three in a row to start the third inning, en route to an 8-7 win against South Dakota Saturday in the rubber match of a three-game series at Nygaard Field.
IUPUI (18-17, 6-5 Summit) hit eight of the 14 home runs hit during the series. Roni Patterson, Taylor Chitwood and Lindsey Richards each hit one Friday and one Saturday. Patterson, Chitwood and Sarah Lawrence each homered in the third that gave IUPUI a 5-1 lead.
The Coyotes (24-16, 6-5) had two homers Saturday. The first was a grand slam by Kassie Loe in the bottom of the third inning that tied the game at 5-5. Loe was 2-for-4 Saturday and drove in five runs during the series.
Richards homered to start the fifth inning to put the Jaguars ahead to stay. IUPUI made it a three-run fifth when Lawrence’s two-out hit deflected off USD pitcher Madison Frain and bounced towards the right side of second base. Loe, the second baseman, and Patterson, who started the play on first collided in the baseline and the ball continued to roll towards right field as Eryn Dillon and Ali Mosier came in to score.
A two-run homer by Katie Dinning – her first of the season – brought USD within a run in the sixth. The Coyotes would go on to put two on with two outs, but Cassie Vodde induced a ground ball to get out of the inning.
Vodde (9-6) retired the side in order in the seventh to earn her second win in as many games. She entered in relief of starter Jocelyn Oppenhuis following Loe’s grand slam. Vodde allowed just the two runs in 4 1/3 innings.
The two teams combined for 62 hits and 48 runs during the three games. Patterson was 6-for-10 for IUPUI. Dinning was 6-for-10 for USD. Coyote left fielder Katie Cochran was 5-for-6 and reached base in eight of nine at bats.
South Dakota returns to the field at 2 p.m. Tuesday for a doubleheader against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
