22nd annual Big Sioux Water Festival to be held May 13

BROOKINGS, SD (KELO-AM) The 22nd annual Big Sioux Water Festival will be held May 13 in the University Student Union's Volstorff Ballroom and other sites on the South Dakota State University campus. Approximately 1,200 fourth-grade students from 32 area schools are expected to attend. The festival provides hands-on activities and experiments for students to learn about water conservation and water quality protection and how everyone can do their part in protecting the environment."It is really a fun day for everyone. The students learn about water and many of the teachers come back year after year," said Trista Koropatnicki, co-organizer from the SDSU Water Resources Institute. "Our activities include traveling through the water cycle, learning how satellite imagery is used by water scientists, how pollution affects the aquatic food systems, water chemistry, relationships between land use and water quality, and historical perspectives of water use."Members from the East Dakota Water Development District, the Brookings County Conservation District and SDSU organize the festival."We have more than 200 volunteers who donate their time and talents to the event," said festival coordinator Deb Springman. The festival is financed through monetary donations from area businesses, organizations, rural water systems, municipalities, conservation districts and the South Dakota Information and Education Program. For additional information or to volunteer, contact: Koropatnicki at 605-688-4910.
