Jefferson Starship will be reunited with one of its longtime members this weekend, as guitarist Mark "Slick" Aguilar will perform with the band for the first time since 2012, when he was forced to leave the group because of a serious liver ailment. Aguilar will hit the stage with the veteran rockers at their shows Saturday outside Syracuse, New York, and Sunday in New York City.
Aguilar, who joined the Jefferson Starship in 1992, exited the band after he was diagnosed with hepatitis C and discovered he was in need of a liver transplant. He underwent the procedure during the summer of 2013 and has been fighting to regain his health since then.
Slick tells ABC News Radio that he initially experienced a hepatitis relapse after the operation, but recently has made a remarkable recovery thanks to a new drug called Sovaldi.
Aguilar reports that he's not planning to return full-time to the Jefferson Starship, but says his band mates showed him their tour schedule and told him he was welcome to join them at as many shows as he wanted. The 60-year-old musician says he doesn't feel like he has the energy to be on the road as much as his old group is.
Meanwhile, Slick says the band's New York City show on Sunday may include a special surprise musical interlude.
