Pressler Outlines Immigration Plan

Yankton and Parker, SD, August 12 2014 – In campaign speeches today in Yankton and at the Turner County fair, Senator Larry Pressler reiterated his specific immigration reform plan. An outline of Senator Pressler’s immigration plan, which he would introduce in January and join others in possible compromise, includes the following:

1.    Relocate US troops from obsolete foreign bases and place them on the southern border. That would secure the border at no extra cost to the US government and taxpayers, since we are already paying those troops.

2.    Institute immigration reform with a path to citizenship as proposed by President Bush.

3.    The path to citizenship would include a background check to be sure that no criminals or drug dealers could stay, and also would impose a fine, but would lead to citizenship within five years.

4.    Our immigration laws would be changed to allow only for carefully considered, approved admissions of any persons. We would still have an immigration program, but it would be decided and controlled by the US.

“We do need immigrants – in fact, we are all immigrants,” said Senator Pressler. “However, we must secure our border and do this on a deliberate, orderly basis. It would not allow for children being sent across the border in the future. I fear our present law will require us to keep those who are here now. We can change that for the future.”
