David Cassidy , who is spending time in a rehab facility after being arrested for DUI in Los Angeles last month, is talking about his struggles with sobriety in a new exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight .
"This has been a very difficult time for me battling this deadly disease, like millions of others in our country," the former Partridge Family star says. "I will remain in treatment for as long as necessary and I am getting the best care I can possibly get anywhere."
Adds Cassidy, "I am working as hard as any human being to live a sober life. I am truly grateful to all of my friends and fans who have sent me thousands of letters and messages in support."
on Tuesday, the one-time teen heartthrob has been charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with his January 10 arrest. Law enforcement sources told the gossip site that a Breathalyzer test he took after being stopped for making an illegal turn found that his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
It was the 63-year-old pop singer's third DUI arrest in the last five years. According to TMZ, because Cassidy he has two prior convictions for DUI, the L.A. City Attorney's Office says he'll be subject be subject to a mandatory 96-hour jail sentence if convicted of his latest offense -- and he could serve as much as one year behind bars.
