David Bowie was among the winners Wednesday night in London at the 2014 Brit Awards, the U.K.'s equivalent of the Grammys.  The influential rock singer was honored with the British Male Solo Artist trophy.

Not surprisingly, the reclusive artist did not attend the big event, although U.K. supermodel Kate Moss was on hand to accept the prize and read a speech prepared by Bowie that was, at various points, enigmatic, gracious and political.

"Lovely," wrote Bowie.  "In Japanese myth, the rabbits on my old costume that Kate's wearing actually live on the moon, Kate comes from Venus and I'm from Mars.  So that's nice!!  I'm completely delighted to have a BRIT for being the best male.  But I am, aren't I Kate?  I think it's a great way to end the day.  Thank you very, very much.  Scotland please stay with us."

In the last sentence of the speech, Bowie apparently is referring to the upcoming referendum in Scotland on whether to secede from the United Kingdom.

David's victory on Wednesday makes the 67-year-old rocker the oldest artist ever to receive a Brit Award.  The previous oldest Brits winner was Tom Jones , who was 62 when he was honored with the Outstanding Contribution Award in 2003.

Bowie also was nominated for this year's British Album of the Year honor for The Next Day , but that trophy went to Arctic Monkeys ' AM .  David has won two other Brits during his career, a Best British Male honor in 1984 and an Outstanding Contribution award in 1996.
