Down Syndrome abortion bill rejected in Pierre

Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) A bill to outlaw the abortion of Down Syndrome babies in South Dakota was rejected in the House Health and Human Services Committee Thursday.

The bill's sponsor, Representative Isaac Latterell (R) says such children are special people and should not be killed in the womb. Latterell has two sisters with Down Syndrome. There was other testimony however that the bill was not about protecting Down Syndrom children, but rather a way of circumventing a woman's constitutional right to an abortion.

It seems most lawmakers on the committee voted against the bill because they were worried that it would make it more difficult to legally defend other South Dakota abortion restrictions.
