This year's edition of the annual series of events celebrating the late Elvis Presley 's birthday will get under way in Memphis this Wednesday, January 8, the day the King of Rock 'n' Roll what would have turned 79. The festivities will kick off on the front lawn of the rock legend's Graceland mansion with the Elvis Presley Day Ceremony, which will include the cutting of a birthday cake and an official proclamation.

The Graceland event also will mark the beginning of a yearlong celebration of what the Presley estate has dubbed the 60th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll. Throughout 2014, a variety of events and activities will pay homage to the 60th anniversary of the recording of Elvis' first official single, "That's All Right," which took place on July 5, 1954 at Memphis' famed Sun Studio.
Another event being held in conjunction with Elvis' birthday celebration is a Presley-themed NBA game between the hometown Memphis Grizzlies and the Phoenix Suns, which will take place Friday, January 10, at FedExForum. The Grizzlies were wear blue suede basketball shoes in honor of the King, while Presley's music, film clips and Elvis-themed live performances will be showcased throughout the evening.
The birthday festivities will wind down on Saturday, January 11, with a special symphonic concert highlighted by Presley's songs. The show, dubbed the Memphis Symphony Orchestra Presents Elvis Birthday Pops -- 60 Years of Rock 'n' Roll , will be held at the city's Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.
