INDIANAPOLIS, IN (KWSN) Jordan Dykstra scored 26 points and cracked the career top-10 in scoring at South Dakota State, Scott Nagy won his 350th career game and the Jackrabbits opened Summit League play with an 86-70 win over IUPUI on Thursday at the Jungle in snowy Indianapolis.
The Jacks fifth straight win boosts their record to 9-7 overall and to 1-0 in The Summit League, while the Jaguars fall to 5-13 overall and to 0-1 in league play.
“I told the guys after the game, I’m gonna start with the bad; defensively we were just not very good and I’m frustrated with it, they’re frustrated with it, we gave up 54 percent shooting for the game, 62 percent in the first half, it would’ve never been a game if we would have just dug in,” Nagy said. “The good part is we’ve won five in a row, we’ve won three in a row on the road, we start 1-0 in the league on the road and we’ll take that any time.”
The Jacks scored on their first possession on a Cody Larson jumper, but IUPUI scored the next eight points, only to see the Jacks responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 12-12 on a Jake Bittle 3-pointer from the left wing with 12 minutes, 6 seconds on the clock, the first of five ties and five lead changes over the next six minutes before Brayden Carlson put the Jacks up for good at 23-22 with 6:04 left in the first half.
SDSU led 38-32 at the half, and then used a 10-4 lead start the second half to open up a 48-36 lead with less than four minutes off the second half clock.
An 8-0 IUPUI run cut the lead to three at 52-49 with 11:30 left in the game, but the Jacks pushed the lead back to 10 points at 63-53 about two and a half minutes later.
The Jags came firing back again, getting to within three points two more times, the last on a Khufu Najee 3-pointer that cut the lead to 73-70 with 3:14 left in the game, but a Dykstra and-1, along with an IUPUI technical foul, essentially gave SDSU a 5-point possession, the start of an 13-0, game-ending run for the Jackrabbits.
Dykstra’s game-high 26 points gives him 1,414 for his career, moving him from 13th all-time at SDSU to 10th, leaving him 10 shy of passing Kai Williams for ninth all-time. He also added a game-high nine rebounds in the win.
Larson added 22 points in the win, with Carlson adding 19, all but two of them in the second half. Bittle added 10 points and a season-high six assists.
Ian Chiles led four Jaguars in double figures with 21 points. Khufu added 15, Mitch Patton 14 and Marcellus Barksdale 10 points in the loss.
The Jackrabbits go for their sixth straight win, and fourth straight on the road, on Saturday, when they take on Fort Wayne in Summit League action at 7 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. CT.
