High Hopes , Bruce Springsteen 's 18th studio effort and the follow-up to his acclaimed 2012 album Wrecking Ball , hits stores today . The 12-track collection features what the New Jersey rocker describes in the liner notes as "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade," including "a proper studio recording" of the longtime live staple "American Skin (41 Shots)" and a full-band version of the Boss' 1995 acoustic tune "The Ghost of Tom Joad."
The album includes contributions from late E Street Band members Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici , and features Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello on eight songs. According to Bruce, Morello -- who filled in for the E Street Band's Steven Van Zandt during the group's Australian 2013 tour -- served as the Boss' muse for High Hopes , "pushing the rest of this project to another level."
The album also features three cover tunes: the title track, a song by Los Angeles-based band The Havalinas ; "Just Like Fire Would," by veteran Australian rockers The Saints ; and "Dream Baby Dream," by pioneering New York electronic proto-punk duo Suicide .
Springsteen and the E Street Band, with Morello in tow, will hit the road soon for a tour of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in support of High Hopes . The trek kicks off January 26 in Cape Town, South Africa, and is plotted out through a March 2 show in Auckland, New Zealand.
As previously reported, Springsteen will celebrate the release of High Hopes with an appearance on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on tonight. Bruce is the evening's only scheduled guest, and is expected to be interviewed as well as to perform. Late Night airs at 12:35 a.m. ET/11:35 p.m. CT.
