Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) A new poll released Tuesday, as the State Legislature opened in Pierre, shows that most South Dakotans support Medicaid expansion, at least with federal dollars.
Governor Dennis Daugaard and the Republican leadership in the Legislature oppose medicaid expansion, in large part because of concern over the cost if and when federal dollars end.
The statewide poll was commissioned by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, which supports expansion. 63 percent of those polled support accepting federal funds to broaden Medicaid to include up to 48,000 additional people.
Megan Myers with the Cancer Action Network tells KELO-AM that expansion would mean that thousands of additional South Dakotans would have preventative cancer care covered. She hopes lawmakers keep the poll results in mind as they debate Medicaid this session.
