High winds could create travel problems across South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO - AM) – State officials are cautioning travelers that strong, gusty winds could cause difficult travel across South Dakota tonight and tomorrow, and snowfall in the northeast quarter of the state could create blizzard conditions at times.

The National Weather Service says dangerously strong winds of 30 to 45 mph, with gusts of 60 to 65 mph at times, are likely to cause blowing and drifting snow with near-zero visibility.

Travelers should be alert to the possibility of reduced visibility and blowing snow, especially after dark and along the Interstate 29 corridor from Dell Rapids to the North Dakota border.

Drivers of high-profile vehicles are asked to use extreme caution when traveling tonight and tomorrow until the winds subside and conditions improve.

Motorists should also be ready to adjust travel plans if necessary.

People who must travel are asked to drive with caution and are encouraged to visit www.safetravelusa.com/sd or dial 511 to check the latest road conditions and any travel advisories.

Motorists are also reminded to carry a winter emergency kit and a charged cell phone in their vehicle.
