Sioux Falls, S.D. (KELO-AM) A South Dakota legislator wants to require that first- and second-grade students show they are proficient at reading before they can advance to the next grade level.
Rep. Betty Olson from Prairie City is bringing the bill to the South Dakota legislature. So far no hearing has been scheduled for HB 1067. Rep. Olson says she is presenting the bill at the request of the school board in Eagle Butte.
Sen. Ryan Maher of Isabel is working on a similar bill that would cover third graders.
