The U.S. Postal Service has unveiled the design of a new "Forever" postage stamp paying tribute to the late Janis Joplin . The stamp will be the latest in the postal service's Music Icon series and, according to Linn's Stamp News , it will be available in August.
The stamp, which resembles a psychedelic concert poster from the 1960s, features a recognizable photo of the legendary blues-rock singer that's tinted blue, while the granny glasses she's wearing are pink. Running around the sides and top of the stamp are the words "Forever Janis Joplin USA" in shades of pink and orange, with three light-blue stars separating each word.
Linn's reports that the image was introduced in the U.S. Postal Service's USA Philatelic catalog for stamp collectors, along with a brief Joplin biography that lauded her as "a groundbreaking singer whose powerful, bluesy voice propelled her to the pinnacle of rock stardom." The bio also noted that "she was known for her uninhibited and soulful performances," and described her as "a pioneer who paved the way for other women in rock music."
Preceding the Joplin stamp in Music Icon series was one paying homage to Jimi Hendrix that was released this past March. Other artists also honored with similar stamps include Johnny Cash , Johnny Cash , Ray Charles and Tejano singer Lydia Mendoza .
